Info Update # 17 Wednesday, 28th May, 2009
Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys

Hope you have been having a good week.
I went to a course yesterday and I can't tell you how great it was to get with other people and get motivated.
The trouble is you come home and go flat again.

This is a problem for actors, as you are often working alone on your acting career, whilst maintaining a job to support it. It is so easy to get distracted with life. My friend is a fabulous artist and with the recession, she has had to go back to office work as the buyers have dried up. I am desperately sad for her as I can see her getting distracted by life ( and the need to make a living) and I know that it is difficult to give up a full time job and go back to living on the breadline, once you have had the money.
It is just that I can see her losing touch with her art and the potential she has.

Acting is very much like that - you have to keep at it and it is a long long road. Often there are times when nothing much is happening and it is easy to get distracted.
There ARE some things you can do however to keep in the game:

You can do some courses, get an actors group together and perform for each other. You can read the Interviews in the members area and you can watch the QOS - How to Act DVD.

I was going over some of the interviews in the members area myself today and I came across one of my favourites with Casting Director - Tom McSweeney.
He says:

Training - to me what you have chosen to do lives is to be a professional auditioner. That is what an actor is. Your job is to go in to small rooms, with small amounts of time, and do small pieces in front of small groups of people. It has nothing to do with money, it has nothing to do with fame, and an audition is an opportunity to perform. And aren't you pursuing this because you love to act. Why then given the opportunity to do the thing that makes you happy do you screw it up? You get nervous. You wouldn't be brought in unless we wanted you to get the job, unless there was something about you that we thought was right that my producer might respond to. You should go into that room for your 3-5 minutes and bring the joy of performing to the room. You are getting to do what makes you happy. What is there to be nervous about? If you are thinking about the job, or the money or the fame or the tape it is over. Desperation has a scent. Everybody in this business i s as terrified as every body else. We are all terrified there will never be another job and the weird thing about this business is that nobody wants to be seen with anybody in need, so they are not perceived to be in need. So if people come in to the room, needing the job, wanting the job, having to have the job to pay the rent, that is all we are going to see, it is going to be in your eyes. Film is a visual medium....etc

(The full interview with all his tips and advice is in the members area under Tutorials!)

He has such amazing advice and is so spot on.
Tom also features in the QOS How To Act DVD. If you have a copy, watch it again, you will get so motivated. If you don't have a copy, get one from the QOS bookstore.

Gold Coasters are now fortunate as Tom has set up a training school at Warner Bros Studios.

Don't lose touch, don't get distracted. You really need to be with others to keep motivated and make some commitments to your acting career.

Have a great week and stay/get motivated.

Cheers
Lee

The Eric Morris System
Having published over 5 books in his theory, Eric claims that his method is derived partly from Lee Strasberg's Method Acting. However, Strasberg's Method focuses too much on craft, according to Eric, and not enough on the actor's instrument. Facing struggle in finding truth, Eric contemplated his theory while heading the Directors Unit at the Actor's Studio in Los Angeles. Eric's method recognizes the fact that actors have emotional blocks, tension, insecurities and other preventions of achieving a fundamental state of being, thus rendering the actor truly organic. In this sense, Eric stresses that acting is essentially living and being. There are 7 major obligations to material, according to Eric: 1) Time and Place, 2) Relationship, 3) Emotional Obligation, 4) Character Obligation, 5) Historic Obligation, 6) Thematic Obligation, 7) Directorial Obligation. After recognizing these 7 obligations, there are the choices the actor utilizes to render these emotions, and finally th e approach to which the actors use these choices.

The Eric Morris System has received praise from such actors as Jack Nicholson and Johnny Depp.

'I found this course to be the best introduction to Morris technique I have experienced. Within a very short amount of time all of the core elements of this quite complicated method were explained and explored in understandable terms. Morris technique can be very confronting but this course was conducted within a very safe and nurturing environment which allowed the actors the creative and personal freedom to extend their skills and find new depths within the craft. I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in finding out about Morris Technique, or for people who like to maintain their skills in the method. You will always find something new.' Warm up this winter with Sydney Shakespeare Festival's winter showcase: The Merchant of Venice. Bonds of family, friendship, religion and money are put to the test when a bride is won with an enemy's money and the debt must be repaid. Shakespeare's unsettling comedy kicks off at Newtown Theatre, centrally located in the heart of Sydney's inner west, on May 26 for three weeks only.
Performances are at 8pm Tuesday to Friday and 2pm and 8pm Saturdays until June 13.

Wealthy heiress Portia sets her suitors a challenge. The winner takes her hand and her money, while the losers sacrifice everything. In Venice, city of consumption, speculation and debt, Bassanio borrows money from Antonio to finance his attempt at the challenge. Antonio, in turn, takes out a loan from moneylender Shylock and if he cannot repay the debt, Shylock will take his bond: a pound of Antonio's flesh. In some of Shakespeare's most electrifying scenes, competing claims of tolerance, prejudice, justice and mercy are played out. In the character of Shylock, Shakespeare created one of the most unforgettable outsiders in all theatre.

Directed by artistic director and co-founder Julie Baz, The Merchant of Venice features Sydney Shakespeare Festival regulars Richard Hilliar, David Jeffrey, Roger Adam Smith, Milly Stilinovic and Nicole Wineberg, along with newcomers Walter Davis-Hart, Amanda Laing and Jacob Thomas.

Sydney Shakespeare Festival is "a precious addition to the scant presence of Shakespeare in Sydney" (Australian Stage). In its second year, and venturing indoors for the first time, the festival is fast becoming a permanent fixture on Sydney's social calendar. "Shakespeare's plays have captured the imagination of millions of people throughout the world for over 400 years and are as exciting and provocative now as the day they were written," said Baz.
